Those who watch things happen Those who wonder what happened Those who make things happen Which one will you be?
I had a moment at the Apple store at Robina Town Centre. As I stood waiting like a faithful husband and father stranded with shopping in hand for my wife to return from the rest room with my three year old son, I witnessed something that could have easily been missed. The Apple store was busy. The customers were made of two types of people. The core group were those who spent time in the store attentively checking out and trialling some of the latest Apple gear. The others were a constant stream of people entering and exiting the store to at least have a look what the fuss was about. My moment came when I realised around 90% of the customers could be seen to come from the age bracket of 10-25 years old. Then it hit me. These people get it, they’re not missing it. Gen Y and Gen X, especially Gen Y, are onto something. I saw how this evolving technology in the store represented something about them. Today’s youth have the future in their hands and they are onto it, they haven’t missed it. They realise that the future is in their hands. They are key stakeholders in the evolution of our culture. Not only are you key stakeholders, you possess an inherent right to lead our culture even to the point of global influence and leadership. You may not be there yet but today’s
youth are active in the future they will someday possess. It seems that rather than waiting to be handed over possession of our culture at some point in the future and in whatever state it may be given to you, you are doing something about it now. You are not waiting until voting age or influential position and status to do something about the moment that will come when you are handed the keys of power. There is an excitement, an expectation and anticipation that your day is coming and you are preparing for it. As exciting as it is, it is also a little scary. It is scary because choices are now being made and action is now being taking by our youth that is shaping the future of our local, regional and global cultures. The choices and actions will sway on the side of evil or good. What future do you want? As you have read this article cultural evolution has not ceased and the momentum of creative revolution has continued marching forward. Don’t miss it! Which one of the three will you be? Will you watch it happen, wonder what happened or make it happen? It will happen anyway, so lead, follow or get outa the way.
